hello , i was looking into buying one of the new gtx 1080's , and i was looking at the core clocks etc . I was thinking of getting the msi gtx 1080 aero (available at overlockers.co.uk) and i noticed that the core clock and mem speeds where lower than say the asus strix version , is this because the card is faster , or just factory overclocked? , could i just overclock the aero version to the same clock and mem speeds as the asus strix version and will it perform the same? obviously the strix version is more , so is it worth paying more for the higher clock speed versions?

Thanks in advance !

Generally speaking yes, again I think cooling would be the biggest factor since when/if the card get too hot it will auto throttle (i.e "declock"). Also some times factory OC cards will cost more because the chip tested higher in their labs so it could also have a better ability to be OC and be stable.

short answer yes some company factory OC cards and it should be faster since i has higher clock/memory speeds. You could also probably OC the MSI to match to the strix version though not sure if there are many review of the OC ceiling on these cards yet. Really you should go with the one with the best cooling system since if the card get too hot it will throttle. You want to go with the one that runs the coolest which will allow for better OCing if you decided too.

So theory, it's only faster because of the core clock , which I could match on the msi one if I overclock it, then they will match in performance ? (if it has sufficient over clocking room due to poor cooling )
