Saints Row 3 lagging badly

I've already googled and tried many things, but no improvement. The game lags horribly, no idea why. CPU is 45-60% and RAM stays at 3.4GB used while in game.
I use a FX4100 and a GT440 with 8 GB RAM. On my previous Steam Account it ran fine. Any idea what I should try out?

I'd assume your GPU is showing it's age. It could also be overheating if it's not been cleaned out in a long time.

2 options to try:
1) Clean out the entire computer (all heatsinks and fans)
2) Replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU.

This removes the possibility of thermal throttling and for the dust removal, should be regular maintenance. If it doesn't work, you're probably very overdue for a new GPU. It's quite old to be running newer, more demanding games.

Thanks for your reply: I replaced the paste on the cpu ~1 month ago, but how do I do it on my card? It's by Asus btw. I can cleaning the dust, but I played Skyrim yesterday and it run just fine. After letting it run for around 10 minutes the frames increased from 4 to 15-18

It's pretty much the same. Take the card out. Identify the screws holding the heatsink and fan on. Unscrew and remove. Clean old paste off, and apply new.

Personally, I'd highly recommend a new GPU as GTX 950s are pretty cheap (About $100) and your performance will go up immensely. But I know the budget battle very well. That's why I suggested cleaning it up first.

Dusted it out (gpu was quite dusted) but no change for the game. When launching it up, the first 2 seconds of the intro are fluent (over 340 fps) but then it starts with this stutter/lag. I actually wanted to get a 750Ti the next weeks

Unless you can get it very cheap, I advise the 950. Much newer and there are new models powered by the PCI slot like the 750ti has, so no new PSU needed. They perform better too. Definitely sounds like the GPU is starting to give up in your machine.

In my house, I have a 950, 960, 970 and a 660. The 950 is just about on par with the more expensive 960. It's very impressive.
