Hi.

I have a Netgear DGND4000 router modem that we have been using as our main router for our home network, which also acts as a gateway the ADSL connection to the wider internet, using the routers internal model. Recently I have noticed that performance issues have been caused by the positioning of the router, degrading the WiFi signal significantly at certain periods. This is due to the aeration filtration pump system that we have for our water treatment plant. Unfortunately the location of the telephone master socket is right next to the pump, and the noise on the telephone line means that placing the ADSL connection anywhere else but the main socket results in connection issues.

I have bought a Zyxel AMG1001-T10A ADSL modem in the hope keeping the ADSL connection at the master socket, and using the WAN port on the back of the router to connect the modem. I am basically substituting the stand alone modem for the routers internal modem, so that I may place the router away from the noise interfering with the WiFi signal. I have powerline ethernet adapters, which I plan to use to bridge the connection between the ADSL model and the router WAN port, so that I may place the wireless router anywhere in the house.

However, the issue I have is that I cannot seem to get the router to talk to the ADSL model. The model has been setup correctly and achieves a connection to the internet. However, I cannot seem to get to the modem through the router. I followed the Ultimate Setup Guide posted here, but I have not had any success. This is what I have done:

My router handles the following:
IP set to 192.168.1.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
DHCP server
NAT on
DNS server set to 192.168.0.1 (modem IP).

My modem has been configured as follows:
PPPoA connection settings for ISP (successful connection to internet as indicated by LEDs on front panel)
NAT off
DHCP off
Firewall off
IP set to 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
DMZ server set to 192.168.1.1

So, I cannot seem to get the Netgear to communicate with the modem. What I want it to do is simply route all internet traffic through the WAN port, to modem, just as it has been doing with the internal ADSL modem.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Kind regards.

A DSL modem combo probably can not be used as a router only. There is no ethernet WAN port. You will have to buy a new ethernet only router.

Have you tried running a brand new DSL wire from the outside of the house (or basement, etc) where the DSL line terminates to where you would like the modem/router?

Thank you very much for your reply.

I was thinking this myself. However the Netgear DGND4000 does have both a 4 port LAN Ethernet and a dedicated WAN Ethernet port on the back, as well as having a built in ADSL modem. So it does suggest that you can connect an external modem, such as a cable fibre modem, for an Internet connection. So I was assuming one could connect an external ASDL modem for that purpose through the WAN port.

Not answering you specific question but hoepfully helpful . I too have the dgnd4000 and it can be used as a router only. I recently upgraded to fibre (FTTC) which cannot be picked up by the DGND4000 router/modem so got the Netgear DM200. This works fine and the DGND4000 allows all its' features
