Hi guys I had my cpu i5 760 running like a dream at 3.7ghz, and my 580 at 900 clock an 2100 memory. I then tried to push my cpu to 3.8gz but all of a sudden when trying to game or bench i would get nvida driver stop responding. Tried everything, reinstalling drivers etc reset all overclocks back to standard with no luck. Then changed gpu to another slot and all works fine again. But slot is PCIe 16 x 4 (1.1 instead of 2.0) could my overclock of damaged my PCIe 16 x 16 slot? Voltages on gpu were 1050 an cpu 1.223 so nothing to high. Any input would be appreciated and do you think running it in x4 I will see much differenc. Thanks in advance.
Dan

Very unlikely. I've friend motherboards overclocking. The power doesn't surge to your GPU. It surges to your CPU and possible, but not often, RAM.

Sounds like slot just went poof or something is inside of it causing a bad connection. Wipe down the slot and your GPU connections.

Yes, I think you will see a bit of performance loss running @ 4x, espcially since it's a 1.1 slot.

Very good point junkeymoney. Thanks for reminding me of that.

So used to AMD builds at the moment :)

Definitely. I prefer the lanes on the motherboard though.

I truly believe Intel did it so they could have leverage over "gamers" who wanted more lanes. They knew people would pay the extra money for more lanes on an expensive chip.

While I can see that it does save space on the motherboard allowing for smaller form factors, I still see marketing tactics at play.

Sorry for getting off topic OP

Thanks guys I will try and give it a good wipe down pcie 16 slot that is. It has been sound in 16 x4 slot so far so looks like i lucked out anyway thanks for all your help. Dan

I guess you could try the card in another computer and see if it reads the same ?? that way you then know it may not be the card ?

you never said anything on your parts or system specs to look at anything there ? have you cleared cmos and setat over in the bios to see if somethings up or just to try to get things back to square one ??

you said '' i would get nvida driver stop responding '' most times that has to do with the card I'd say 90% of the time why I think you need to test the card in another computer or another card in yours

Hi junkymonkey, yes did a complete bios reset so it was all back to stock, But since i have swapped slots on motherboard had no problems and overclocked to my normal overclock GTX 580 @ 890 on the core, 2100 on the memory. Cpu running at 3.73 ghz got the voltage on dynamic at max of 1.21 and all seems stable played Witcher 3 at 1080p 40 to 60 fps on medium to high detail for over 6 hrs straight and it worked like a dream. Other weird thing i have noticed is my temps for Cpu seem to be a good few degs lower at ideal sitting at 29 and playing the Witcher didnt go above 68 to 72. I cant really tell if i am loosing any fps with my gpu in 16x (1.1) x4 slot so not to bothered just hope it stays that way.

Your probably right with it being a problem with my Gpu its no spring chicken (but neither is my mother board lol). I haven't got another system to try it out in or I would do. The other thing was the problem would only arise when i tried to do something demanding with the Gpu. I could surf the Internet and watch videos no problem, even benchmark with PassMark would run fine, but as soon as i tried to run Heaven or play a game I would get that error. Strange

are you using the latest driver ?? may try a older one you card does show supported with the latest but ?? like my AMD card with the latest amd drivers just not quite right and the older 13.12 is what I use with out issue ?? cant hurt to try ?

I do know heaven can act that way I sen a few reports like you say and my buddies son had ut just keep black screening on him ... maybe with heaven try another download of it from a different source ? may of got a bad one or corrupted in some way ? I would think playing witcher as you say you do sounds like heaven just may be bad ?

you still have not gave your system specs to look at other things about it and with NVidia they spec there cards to require a x8 pcie min. slot ?

I guess you tried a different monitoring program to see if the one your using is reporting things wrong ??

Motherboard Gigabyte ud3 1156
only works now ive changed pcie slot cpuz says it 1.1 x4 picture below.

Yh I no its an old build. Like i said everything is working fine now iv'e put the card in to the second pcie slot so im happy, and i can still run games at medium to high settings on 1080p.

Was looking at a Amd 3850 with maybe a GTX 770 or 780 what do you reckon to them, the most demanding thing i do is play games so wouldn't need it really for anything else there just that much cheaper when you factor in a new motherboard cheers Dan
