I have an i5-4590 currently but I'm planning to upgrade to an i7.
Basically, short and simple: Would it be wise to sell the i5 on a site like eBay?

no, the upgrade wouldn't really gain you that much, and it would cost you quite a lot. basically, if you can buy an i7 cheap on eBay, then someone is going to expect to buy your i5 even more cheap on eBay.

if you were starting with a G or i3, then it would be worth considering. but from an i5, personally i wouldn't even bother.

wanting to upgrade that system depends on your needs a few questions
first what is the rest of the system
and 2nd what is it being used for?
