Hello all,
I recently bought an Alienware x51 r3, (which I am now slightly regretting ): ), and I was looking to beef up the graphics slightly from my crappy GTX 745. I am super hyped about Nvidia's new GTX 1080 and 1070 cards, it looks like the 1080 might be ridiculously overkill for a ~= £900 gaming rig, but I thought the 1070 along with a RAM upgrade would be a nice boost considering I do a lot of recording. I checked, and it seems that the 1070 would be compatible with the 2016 Alienware x51 r3, as you can see the specs of it and another definitely compatible card below.
Card: | GTX 1070 | GTX 960 (Definitely compatible with x51 r3)
Height: | 4.376" | 4.376"
Length: | 10.5" | 10.5"
Width: | 2-Slot | Dual Width (Same as 2-slot)
Graphics Card Power: | 150w | 145w
System Power: | 500w | 500w
Supplementary Power: | 8-pin | 2x 6-pin
That to me looks like they may very well be compatible, I'm really sorry if I'm a PC hardware noob, but I think the 5 watt difference between them will not really be a problem. The one thing I'm worried about is supplementary power, because they are obviously two non compatible types. There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer about the safety of different ways of splitting and combining plugs, although the GPU manufacturers don't like it. If anyone could give me a hand with this, that would be much appreciated and I'm sure many r3 users would benefit from it.
