So my current computer consists of:
Gigabyte h97 gaming 3
GTX 970 Exoc Black edition 4GB
8GB DDR 3 G-Skill Sniper RAM
Intel i5-4590
Stock cooler
Cougar 750W power supply

I'm planning on selling my 970 to purchase a 1070.

Three questions:

A. Will it be easy to replace a 970 with a 1070 with this setup
B. I have had the same thermal paste on my cpu with my stock cooler for about a year, how often should I be changing it and what would be a good thermal paste to use?
C. What difference would DDR4 Ram do and would I need to replace other parts like my motherboard to do that upgrade?

Cheers!
Tim

Solution
A: Yes - but I question whether it's worthwhile. What's your monitor resolution? If you're on a 1080P @ 60hz monitor there won't be much gain stepping up to a 1070. If you have a high res and/or high frame rate monitor, then you could make a much better case for an upgrade.

B: I'd say "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Use something like HW Monitor to check your temps while you're pushing the computer hard. As long as your CPU temps are where you want them, there's no need to go messing with your hardware.

C: Your mobo & CPU are DDR3 only. Very little gain in going to DDR4 even if the motherboard did support it, but absolutely no reason to upgrade your CPU+Mobo+Ram. They're all still nice and quick.

Solution
A Yep, don't see any issues there and if the CPU can push a 970 along well enough, it should be okay for a 1070.

B On the stock cooler? I don't bother to replace the paste. As long as the CPU-Cooler seal isn't moved at all, it should be fine. Clean the fins regularly though.

C Not a great / noticeable difference to be honest on that setup imo - but if your mobo supports it, it would be an upgrade that you can take with you to the next build...

Thank you so much!
Just a quick side note, I'm currently rocking a 1080p monitor, but when I upgrade my gpu I will upgrade to a 1440p monitor

Your PS, mobo, and CPU are fine for upgrading to pascal.

You don't need to worry about the paste unless your temps start going up OR start breaking 80c under load.

Digital Foundry has a great RAM OC FPS results videos. DDR3 to DDR4 is only going to make a difference if you're planning on overclocking the ram and has more efficacy when you're overclocking the CPU.

Any "modern" intel quad core is fine. Will there be a small dip in FPS from using a sandy bridge vs skylake? of course. But it can still "handle" it.
