Windows Update has stopped working

HI

I have had to reinstall due to issues i was having and that issue i was having is now fixed. I have everything set up but windows update, i have done a 100 so far and got 82 left.

I have tried the run service thing, msconfig and the windows repair software Microsoft offers.

Is there anyway to get this thing to run correctly, it just stuck on checking for updates constantly.

Is it save to leave the 80 updates for now as i do have Norton as my security software.

I recently had a customer repair come in that was doing the same thing. Hanging at the " Windows searching for updates" from the updater.
I ran this http://www.portableupdate.com/
and then I ran the MS hotfix to fix the corrupted setting for the Windows updater. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

once I ran both, Portable update and then the hotfix ( in that order ) after restart, updater was working and all updates were up to date.
