I want to update GPU, coming from 6970's CF: best option?

Hi guys,

I have a pretty old PC, it's core components being:

CPU: Core i7 920 @ 4 GHz
RAM: 12 GB DDR3 1600 MHz
GPUs: 2 x Radeon HD 6970 in CF (actually they were 6950's, but i made the bios trick and managed to unlock the 6970's in them) (on a custom watercooling loop)
Monitors: 3 x [1920 x 1200] (Eyefinity)

I intend to keep playing on my 3-monitor setup, and i'm also considering a Vive/Rift. I also have a Samsung 27" 3D monitor [1920x1080], that works only with AMD hardware (bitchin' propietary systems...), and that i still use. If i go the VR route, i won't be using it anymore, but VR is not a sure thing for me yet, i first need to try it.

On the CPU front, i'm holding until Zen comes out, but for the time being i don't plan on changing CPUs (+mobo+ram).

On the GPU front, however, my CF setup is already falling short on some games (Assassin's Creed Unity, Thalos Principle). Because of the 3D monitor, i'd like to stick to Radeon. And because i've already suffered enough micro-stuttering and scaling issues, i'd very much like to avoid CF again (plus i'm not sure how many PCIe lanes will my next mobo have). My problem is that i don't have a clear idea of how the 6970's CF compare to modern GPUs. I would assume that 2x6970 may perform like a 290X/390 or so, is that sensible? Any suggestions? Should i go the Fury/Fury X route? Wait for Vega? Go Nvidia and dump the 3D monitor?

Thanks in advance for your help, guys!

I've seen tests comparing the CF6970s to an R9-290X and they were similar with the 290X mostly ahead, but not enough to justify the switch. If you Google "Crossfire HD6970 vs." you will find lots of tests to look at.

Hey Blas,
I personally would try and hold off till the end of the month and see what the new AMD 480 card brings. Hopefully will start seeing some benchmarks and how they compare to others in the next couple of weeks. They're VR ready according to AMD and are at a 200 dollar price point. Hope this helps some and I myself am running a single 7970 yet waiting for something worthwhile to upgrade to.

I'm building an old T3400 with 2- HD6970s I have lying around and was asking myself the same question. I came across some tests of the HD6990 Crossfired with the HD6970. The results almost equaled 4- hd 6970s. I'm not saying this is the best option but it is one of the more interesting ones.
