I was just checking this two cables which comes with UASP support:

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-SATA-Drive-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00HJZJI84/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-2-5-Inch-Adapter-Optimized-EC-SSHD/dp/B011M8YACM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1464880386&sr=8-6&keywords=uasp

Just wondering which one is best? I will be using it along with a SSD so I expect the best performance I can get through the USB port. don't want to go with something more expensive though.

Thanks

Yes, your SSD will not saturate USB 3.1 Gen 1 speed fully. 5Gbps = 600MBps roughly in terms of bandwidth.

How do I know if I will actually get those 10GB/s speeds? I don't even know if my Lenovo y50-70 laptop supports USB 3.1. Sounds interesting though.

You most likely don't have USB 3.1 so you don't benefit the 10Gbps (gigabits) , not 10 GBps (gigabytes).
You can choose to get the USB 3.1 to SATA 3 for the future once you have a system that has usb 3.1.
USB 3.1 type A should be coloured teal blue.

Ins't USB 3.1 type A the same as 3.0? and the 10Gbps USB beeing type C? I'm confused.

An interesting device. First one of its type I've seen with USB 3.1 capability.
I doubt the OP's Lenovo laptop has USB 3.1 support although (presumably) the 3.1 device is backwards compatible with USB 3.0. But at $29.99 I wouldn't think it would be of interest for the OP.

My Z170 system does have USB 3.1 capability. I've been using the StarTech USB 3.1 "docking station" with it and am generally pleased with its data transfer speed as compared with USB 3.0.

Now have you actually worked with that DATOptic device you refer to as a "fast adapter"? Or are you just referencing the Amazon ad?

Thanks that's the information I was looking for hehe, then USB 3.1 doesn't mean it will go as up as 10Gbps (when beeing gen 1), anyway 5Gbps should be enough for my Kingston V300 right?

What speeds do you get using the StarTech docking station?

I use lot of DATOptic devices, so as Areca and Akitio :) . One of our client who uses under Android with regular SATA drive got this:
xxxxx~$ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/test bs=4M count=1000 conv=fdatasync 1000+0 records in 1000+0 records out 4194304000 bytes (4.2 GB, 3.9 GiB) copied, 29.854 s, 140 MB/s

Where my test with Intel SSD it's about 10% faster regular USB 3.0 adapter

I like it, because i know it is some what future proof

A little off topic with USB3.1 host and device Asmedia tests transfer rate @ 830MB/s, i tried the same set up with 2x intel SSD i only get 635MB/s still try to figure out why I can not get 835MB/s as Asmedia's test

I don't have the benchmark reports available at the location I'm currently at but I know there was a substantial increase in data transfer rates using USB 3.1 capability as compared with USB 3.0. The USB 3.1 device we were using was the StarTech SDOCKU313 docking station with a ASRock Z170 Extreme 7+ MB.

Virtually all of our data transfer operations involved SSD disks since we've been converting our systems to those types of disks.

As I recall there was about a 50% speed increase in using the USB 3.1 device as compared with our USB 3.0 external enclosures.

But in those test you used a system which supports USB 3.1 right?

This MB has 4x USB3.1 ports, so with 50% increase, he must have both host and device USB 3.1. Our test with USB 3.0 host you still see an increase if the USB 3.1 adapter is used

I didn't realize to check the mobo specs, thanks.

Just to be clear re the USB 3.1 setup on the ASRock MB...

There's a single USB 3.1 Type A port on the rear panel. As I'm sure you know the USB Type A connector is the ubiquitous one found on our flash drives. And that's what we used, i.e., a USB 3.1 Type A cable, during our tests for connection to the StarTech USB 3.1 device.

There's also a USB Type C port on the rear panel as well.

The other two USB 3.1 ports (USB Type A & C) are found on the 3 1/2" front panel piece of equipment that ASRock includes with this motherboard. We had some problems with this item after installation so I'm not sure if it's a "work-in-progress". (ASRock sells this item separately as well I understand). I haven't had the time to play around with it so perhaps it was a problem on our end re installation.
