Dual SLI and SSD PCIe lane sharing on ASUS X99 Deluxe II

I am building a new machine based on the ASUS X99 DELUXE II w/ 40 lane CPU. I am planning on running dual GPUs in SLI at PCIE 3.0 16x (which is supported by the board), and want to make sure that those speeds are retained.

With that said, I am searching for a primary SSD for my OS disk, and was considering the Samsung 950 Pro in the (only) M.2 slot on the Mobo. This poses 2 questions:

1. I cannot find anywhere where it states that particular M.2 slot is NVMe compatable. There are 2 U.2 connectors on the board, and it does state that they are NVMe, which leads me to believe that the M.2 slot is AHCI. Can anyone confirm?

2. The documentation states that the M.2 slot is "shared" with the PCIE x16 position that my second GPU would be plugged into. Does that mean that that slot would be reduced to x8 speeds? And would the SSD still get 3.0 x4 (full) bandwidth?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Dennis

There will be no perceivable difference. Some people have reported extremely small improvements between x16 and x8, but really nothing even close to major.

As for the M.2 slot, I really don't know man. According to the documentation it supports "PCIe SSDs" but I can't say anything more about it. You can always go with a U.2 or PCIe SSD.

So I am planning on running dual GTX 1080's. Are you saying that there will be no perceivable performance difference with these cards running in x16/x8 vs x16/x16, or there actually is not a difference at all because the second card doesn't care that it is running at x8 speeds?

Also, any insight as to that M.2 slot being NVMe compatible?

Thanks for your help!

I am going to use the new ASUS Deluxe II for a build. I haven't done one in a while and wanted to see if anyone could confirm if this set up is doable? I will be going i7 6850k processor with duel SLI GPU and will be running both a M.2 and U.2 SSD. The GPUs will be in PCI_1 and PCI_3. The problem is the PCI_3 shares bandwidth with the M.2 and the U.2_2 slot both being X4 which would force my second GPU to run at X8 instead of X16. I was wondering if since the PCI_5 slot shares bandwidth with the U.2_1 slot and runs X4 with the U.2_1 enabled could I run the M.2 SSD in this slot via a Card adapter and have them both function?

So in your opinion I should use something like the Intel PCIe card in the Fifth slot along qith the U.2? Do you think they will both funtion in this spot since they share bandwidth?
