6700k vs 5820k: Is 5820k better for M.2 drive + dual SLI/CF?

I am itching for a new rig, and I think I have narrowed down my CPU to i7-5820K/5930K. However, I am still considering i5-6600K because it will be used primarily for web browsing & gaming, but I am betting that future games will use more cores, and I plan to use two M.2 drives and maybe dual video cards later, so I need all the lanes I can spare. Any suggestions for a good mobo? [strike]Overclockability would be nice, but not a top priority[/strike]. Price is not a huge factor, but I am not keen on spending $500-600 on a mobo. I don't need built-in WiFi or dual NICs. TIA

Edit: Overclockability is now a priority

Their no reason to even buy a m.2 drive for what your using the PC for, they cost double the money of a regular SATA SSD per GB and you will never see any difference in speed. I would get a i7 6700K paired with a Z170 motherboard in the 150 buck area. The difference in running SLI in 8X8 and 16x16 is little to nothing.
Put all the money you saved into the video card and you wont need SLI unless your running the most demanding games on a 4K monitor.
For gaming I can't think of any reason to buy over this, SSD for OS and programs,500GB SSD for games, power supply big enough to run SLI, plenty of memory, good cooling, the GTX 1080 is overkill unless your running a 144MHz 2K monitor. For 60MHz 2K monitor or less the GTX 1070 when released...

This year they are putting out X99 boards with dual M.2 and/or Dual U.2 Ports. However even on the X99 those dual M2/U2 ports are switched to the 40 lanes (if you get a 40 Lanes CPU)

More than likely the generation PCH replacing the X99 will be similar to the Z170 where there will be more PCIe 3.0 lanes built-in within the chipset.

I am upgrading my current 4790k system to a Broadwell-E. I currently have a Samsung 950 Pro (512) and 2x 980TI. on the Z97 I just don't have enough PCIe lanes. Hence the upgrade. But after much research, going to a dual M2/U2 isn't all that great(due to switching). If you are going with dual M2/U2, I would wait for the next generation replacing the X99.

Ok, I am still debating this :pt1cable:
But the CPU & storage have changed. I plan to use only one M.2 slot now. I already have a Samsung 950 Pro for booting/Windows 10, and a Samsung 850 Evo 1TB for everything else. Sure, I could get a lot more bang for the buck with a magnetic drive or even SSHD, but I hate waiting for stuff to load. Anyhoo, last week I bought a i7-6700k + ASRock Z170 Extreme6. Today, I found a great deal on an open box i7-5820k, so I got that plus a MSI X99A SLI Krait (I will return whichever combo I don't use)

I know the 6700k beats the 5820k in >90% of games, but the gap closes somewhat when the 5820k is overclocked to 4.4-4.6 GHz. The main reason I am considering the 5820k is because I want to have enough PCIe lanes available for M.2 + 2-card SLI/Crossfire later on. Is the 5820k/X99 overkill for that? I also want to have some degree of future-proofing, and I think the 5820k/X99 will offer a better chance of that. What do you guys think?

Hey, I was just reading this post and was wondering what conclusion you came to? Did you stick with z170 or x99?

Nah, bro. I am still sitting on the fence lol. I actually did return the 6700k/Extreme6 (on the last day I could without penalty), but I will buy them again if I go with Z170.

I change my mind every other day. Now I am leaning toward Z170 simply because it will save a couple of benjamins, and 6700k will offer the best overclockability & ultimately the highest GHz & IPC. But I have this nagging feeling that X99/5820k will age better. Decisions, decisions....

I see, best of luck choosing.
