I have an XP machine without any disk burning software. This is OK for some old 3D software and a printer but I need to instsall the latest version of Linux Mint as a dual boot installation. I have an older version of Linux Mint (17.1) but I can't find any solution to this problem: trying to write the downloaded .ISO file to disc results in a crashed live xfce burn because the disc is already in use by the live session!!!

Does anybody have a work around to this please?

You cannot generally burn a CD twice. You'll need to burn it to a USB drive, and boot off that.

The other option would be to just install 17.1, then upgrade that. Linux tends to handle version upgrades far better than Windows.
