Solution
AMD has just announced the RX 480 too. It's due out in just under a month. We won't know anything for sure until we have proper reviews to look at, but from all reports and marketing it looks to be as fast, or maybe even a little quicker than the GTX 970, but will start at $200 (once early demand settles).

Your friend may want to get gaming right away, in which case that 970 is a good choice, but it might also be worth waiting to see what the card will be like.
if you are getting a K version processor, then get a z170 motherboard so that you can overclock. what is the power supply? is it cooler master as well? other than that it looks good. nice to see people building PCs for more than just themselves.

The power supply is included with the case and it is CoolerMaster brand as well just not any kind certified ( Bronze, Silver, Gold...) and i don't think he'd want to overclock.

Thanks for the reply btw :)

I was suggesting to wait for the release of 1070, he can wait i think :D

I could understand a 480, but a 1070 would be pointless for 1080p gaming, and a decent 1440p monitor is expensive. I agree the price is nice, but that would be like supercharging your minivan simply because you have a discount at the local garage.

Could be some sort of future proofing if i may say, if he plans on getting a new monitor or something, a 1070 would be a fitting choice dont you think ?

Also about the power supply, i have the same case with the same psu and it's running wonderfully in spite not being certified.

Just remember the fact that the 1070 is looking like a $380 card, vs the $200 RX 480. So when you say "future proofing". You would have $200 to spend now, and then almost the same amount to spend again in 2 years time or so when the 480 is proving less "future proof". It's very likely a $200 card in 2 years would beat a 1070, so you're not really worse off.

The future proofing argument is easier to make with a CPU, where a future upgrade requires a mobo, CPU, OS and sometimes RAM too. But GPU is so easy to upgrade you're usually better off buying what you need now and saving your $$s for down the road. Mid-range is usually where the best value for money is found.

1070 is looking like a solid card, no question, but really wasted on 1080P.
