Hi,

I assembled a small mini-itx rig today using the MSI H110 board. The setup is something along these lines:

  • MSI H110 Pro Motherboard (https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/H110I-PRO.html)
    I5 skylake processor
Cryorig C7 CPU Cooler Fan (http://www.cryorig.com/c7.php)
    EVGA 430W power supply
    Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB memory

While the computer starts and I can get into the BIOS, the cpu fan never turns on. It is properly plugged into the cpufan pins.
To test if the fan was broken I plugged it into the sysfan pins which worked, so I am assuming that something is wrong with the mainboard (cpufan pins) at this point. If I check the cpufan speed in the BIOS, it also always stays at 0 RPM. Does anybody have any ideas what could cause this? Has anybody succesfully used the Cryorig C7 cooler with that mainboard? Or is it time to return it (its brand new btw)?

Thanks!

Solution
Well, since the CPU fan works when you connect it to another header, then I'd say either the CPU fan control is turned off in the bios, which seems drastically unlikely, or the motherboard is faulty. You could connect the CPU fan to the sysfan header temporarily to gain access to the bios and check that the CPU fan is not disabled in the settings. Again, it's unlikely, but possible. At least that way, you have at least SOME cooling to the CPU. Just don't plan to use it that way for long. Just long enough to verify that the fan either is or is not disabled. If it IS enabled, but is still not working, then the motherboard needs to be returned.
Have you tried connecting a different fan to the CPU fan header and momentarily turning the system on to see if that fan spins?

It is not recommended that you run the system without the CPU fan working for more than a few seconds at a time. Certainly not long enough to be going into the bios and looking around. Is the fan itself actually spinning and is just not being reported correctly in the bios, or does the fan not spin at all? Make sure you're connecting the fan correctly, with the key on the fan header lined up with the notch on the fan plug and that all four pins are actually seated into the socket.

If you do not have the key lined up with the notch, and instead have the notch on the fan connector facing away from the key on the motherboard header, you could possibly short out the fan, the motherboard or just not have it work at all. Double check that. It's also easy for one pin to miss the hole even if you have it oriented the right way and not be where it needs to be.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick response!
The fan is not spinning at all when using the cpufan pins, only on the sysfan ones. Unfortunately, I don't have another fan at hand right now. I will double check the pins, but I am pretty sure that there is only one way to plug it in and that I did it properly.

Is there any other way to check if the cpufan pins are properly working?
Thanks!
