Issues with LAN IP config not being valid, system time won't stay updated.

Hey everyone. Here's my rig:

Intel i5-4690K
Gryphon Z87 (BIOS Version: 1802)
EVGA GeForce GTX 970
G. Skill Ripjaw 16gb
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250gb
Corsair TX650 PSU

Built it myself and it's a fantastic PC, I love it. I've had it about a year without a single problem, I take very good care of it and I'm very internet savvy and fortunately I'm not dimwitted enough to do things like visit sickasstorrentsbro dot com and download freemovie.exe and then wonder why the FBI says I owe them $250. Moving on..

So recently I was confused when I kept losing my internet connection. I use a LAN connection normally but the problem persisted even when I tried using Wi-Fi via a Wi-Fi USB drive.

I've ran virus scans, cleared caches, tried other browsers, selective startups, made sure all my drivers were updated and all windows updates installed (yes my Win7 is genuine and activated), and other various things but this problem persists.

In my handy-dandy extra fancy infographic below you can see the band-aid I use 2-4 times an hour to restore my connection.

For some reason it won't embed my image - I guess it's not terribly important but here's the imgur link.

Along with this issue, I've frequently been unable to access https sites (Tried clearing all history/cache/etc, tried Clearing SSL State, tried unchecking TLS 1.0 with no luck).

Last but not least, I cannot get my system date/time to stay current. Each time I go to Adjust Date/time>Internet Time>Change Settings>Update Now it will update to the current time, but freezes right there. Synchronizing with other time servers produces the same result.

Sorry for the lengthy post and the THREE questions I'm posting, but it seems like these bugs are interrelated in some way. Virus scans haven't helped, and I forget if I had the https and system time problem before I reformatted my drive 3 weeks ago...but I definitely had the issue with my LAN and the whole valid IP config mystery. I thought a reformat would rid me of that annoyance but obviously it hasn't.

Any and all help, suggestions, and advice are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Check it anyway. I've seen manufacturers cheap out and put in used batteries instead of new. Either grab your multimeter and measure the cell's voltage, or (if you have no multimeter) buy a new one for a few bucks and try swapping it in to see if it solves your problem. This is the sort of fix which is so cheap you should just try it instead of wasting time arguing about why it just can't be the problem.

Only about 6 months old, along with the rest of the build. That'd be a pretty short time frame for the cmod battery to crap out on me I would think.

The symptoms you describe do point to a failing CMOS battery (or failing clock). The computer is probably losing the IP address because it loses track of the time, and thinks the DHCP lease has expired. As a temporary fix (until you can get to the store to buy a CR2032 battery), you can assign your PC a static IP so it's no longer dependent on DHCP leases. SSL will still not work though because it relies on your PC's clock being reasonably close to the secure server's clock.

Thanks for the in-depth assessment and explanation, I knew the CMOS supplied juice for the clock and other stuff but that was the extent of the knowledge I had regarding it - the fact that my IP config and everything depended so heavily on my system time is good to know.

Unfortunately I am out in the boondocks and won't be able to hit a radio shack or anywhere else for a week is unfortunate, but I'll get a new one soon. Until then would it be a good or bad idea to pull the CMOS battery off a spare computer I have lying around and try using that?
