ok well I want the new upgrade I'm going to buy a decent most recent line of motherboars for the bells and wisltes and faster chipset/bus/pci speeds.

so I cant afford much on the processor right now but will be buying a great board to later upgrade the cpu without rebuilding everything. I have a 280x and 850watt corsair psu

so what processer can I put in the latest socket skylake I think it is? 1150 or 1151lga I forget wich is latest

what would be as cheap as can be processor that would fit the latest socket but as equivalent if not better speed the a overclocked 3.8ghz i7 first gen 950.

Then if its not too long before you get a fast Skylake i7 you're fine. You probably wont have time to install games that you're going to be CPU-limited. Or maybe you will, I dont know.
Even so, you might not notice it when you are CPU-limited.

Btw, if you dont want to look at endless charts and benchmarks to compare the i7 950 with the i3 6100, go to Tom's CPU performance hierarchy table, and look at what tiers the 2 CPUs are in.
The i3 6100 is unlisted unfortunately, but the older i3's (Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, Hashwell) are listed 1 tier higher than your i7.
Thats not a coincidence, there's a reason for it.

Now because your i7 is a bit OC'ed you could say its in the same tier as the i3.
The i3 is faster in every way, the only...

Skylake is socket 1151.
I would recommend the i3-6100, it should be faster than your old i7 in most if not all games.
High frequency, hyperthreading, new Skylake architecture, all at a low price so you can later upgrade to an i5 or i7.

Although if you can get an i5 or i7 right now it would be even better.

EDIT: Just checked Amazon which lists the i3 6100 at $116, not bad at all.
I cant recommend anything cheaper that would be better than your old i7 950. I think this i3 should be the minimum.

so you think the i3-6100 would be better then my 950? ok I may do that thing is when I can afford it couple months from now I want to get the fastest i7 out. so for now all I really need it to be is as fast as the i7 950 Nehalem first gen. never have gotten my 950 stable at much over 4.0ghz so the othe rprocessors out I know are way faster. believe it or not I have 16gb of ddr3 1866 ram dual channel newer stuffi used later on instead of tri channel in my rig.

however I want to buy one of ther best motherboards out there. that'l cost 280x got everything else and believe it or not my budget is tight being on disability if I wanted to buy parts an wait 2 and half months for the processor that might be fine so really I'm not going to own this chip long at all before I upgrade to best i7. so I am shooting for cheap and as fast in games and speedy ness with web browsing. I have a pcie predator ssd to. need the newer board for snappy ness cheap is bnest I can live with a few things for 2 montsh as long as it as fast in games

The i3 is faster in every way, the only advantage that old i7 has got is its 4 threads 8 cores, so I would imagine there might be some thread-heavy application that the i7 might have an edge. Even so, there wouldnt be that much difference.
But if you're comparing core for core, clock for clock, the i3 beats that old i7 just like a 25 year old would beat an 80 year old grandpa (ok maybe I'm exaggerating slightly).

Anyway, you mentioned your RAM (ddr3 1866), you're going to have DDR4 2133++ now, hehe.

Btw, you might want to invest in a good graphics card as well, your 280x used to be decent, but now its old and wont be able to keep up with the rest of the system. Not saying its a bad card, but you are going for a high-end system and you seem to want the best, so you will need a high-end card as well.

I'd suggest either the 1070 or 1080 from Nvidia, or maybe by the time you do this AMD will have an answer to Nvidia's Pascal, so things may be different, I dont know. As of right now, the 10 series cards from Nvidia are the best options depending on your budget of course.
Otherwise, if you're happy with the 280x, thats fine, but in that case I dont see why you'd get the best i7 for your system, an i5 would be just as fine.
