I need expert help!

I am currently working out my new desktop build and I am really struggling with what graphics card I will go for. I will currently only be gaming at 1080p and had almost landed on GTX 970 as it will be sufficient for FHD gaming. BUT, in light of upcoming releases a lot of questions keep nagging me with regards to future proofing and cost. I am especially thinking of VR.

Should I wait and strike a deal when the GTX 970 drops in price? (assuming this will be the case with the upcoming releases).
Should I close the future proofing gap and go for the GTX 1070?
Should I wait for the RX 480? From what I read this card should be cheaper and cover my needs to 1080p gaming and be excellent for VR compared to price.

Please help ease my mind.

Thank you.

The 8GB version is rumored to be $230. I'm torn between the 4GB and the 8GB as I game at 1080p and the general consensus is that 4GB is enough. However, I'm looking at Star Citizen which I can see pushing past 4GB pretty easily..

To be honest, even a R9 380 is good for 1080p gaming. That's what I'm using, and everything plays on ultra settings, even Battlefront.
The 1070 would almost be overkill for 1080p, since it tops even the 980 and at a lower price point. It would be fun to super-sample everything at 2K and scale down though. If you go this route, wait for the vendor-modded cards to be released. They'll be $100 or so cheaper than the "founder's edition" cards available now.

A new 970 is going to run you upper 200's to low-mid 300's. The 1070 will double the performance of a 970 for only $100 more. If you need something now, then you have no choice, but if you can wait, I would. Check out the AMD 480 once it comes out.

If its just gaming and VR, I would say wait for the RX 480 since it'd be the cheapest option with that level of performance, though keep in mind the $200 is 4GB vram. the 8GB version should be announced soon but will probably run around the same price as the current 970.

Im trying to decide what I want myself, but I also do video editing.

True, plus if you want to be able to do VR and 4K at some point, 8GB would definitely be insurance against the future

true, plus having 8GB vs 4gb is a little extra insurance for future proofing
