Hello everyone,

I have a small dilema here, my computer monitor broke after 5 years so I am going to buy new one next week - ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q

I also wanted to upgrade all my computer parts, but many say that 2600k oced is still good enought so I just decided to replace my AMD HD 7970 MSI to either NVIDIA 1070 or 1080. Which one should i go for with this1440p / 165 HZ monitor? I could buy 1080 but that would eat up a lot of my savings, but if it is worth the investment, gtx 1070 would not be enought for this monitor then I am willing to go for it.

I am computer games enthusiast sometimes end up playing 10+ hours, usually mmorpgs like World of Wacraft, Black Desert Online and sometimes Dota 2 or Overwatch, also planning to buy Battlefield 1 :)

So what do you guys think? Nvidia 1070 or 1080?

Thank you for your help

My current PC setup (I am going to uprade all parts with Kaby Lake or next year for sure):
Windows 10 x64
GIGABYTE Z68X-UD3P-B3
CPU Intel 2600k OCed to 4,3 (Corsair h80i cooler)
GPU MSI Radeon HD 7970 Lightning 3 GB
8 Gb ram 1600Mhz
650 PSU Corsair
2 TB HDD / 500 GB SSD

The 2600K would bottleneck the 1080, but should be OK for the 1070. The 1070 should be good at 1440p, it tops the 980 easily. The G-Sync in the monitor will be nice with this as well.
If you can, wait for the vendor-modded cards to be released, they'll be roughly $100 cheaper than the "founder's edition" cards.

Thank you for your answer, as I said, I am going to buy new CPU later this year or next year for sure, with new motherboard, rams, case. I could stand some bottleneck for few months, but if you think 1070 is still more worth it I will consider it, also in Czech Republic it seems that modded cards are same or even more xpensive than founders edition (atleast for gtx 1080 preorders) so far ... lol

For the majority of people, the 1070 will easily meet their needs. The only people that will need a 1080 (for now) are enthusiasts that want every drop of performance they can get, people running VR @ 1440p, or 4K gaming.
Price will vary based on where you live, so I couldn't say what would happen where you are. I know that Newegg usually does international orders, but I don't know if they do the Czech Republic. Best way to find out is to ask their support team.

I have the ROG Swift PG279Q (which you will love by the way) and a 4GB 980 that easily pushes this monitor . The 1070 is supposed To be the sweet spot for comparable but better performance than the 980. Save yourself the premium and buy the 1070. You only get nominal gains for almost twice the price of a 1080. 1440 P with a 1070 will be more than fine and you get that extra money to spend in your cpu /motherboard.

I wreck in CSGO, and most games look simply stunning with Gsync and high refresh rates. 1070 FTW

go for the 1070 with the PG279Q. is it a great card for 1440p. I just went for this combo myself after trying it out. I play WOW, Overwatch, and also planning on getting BF1. we will do great with those games.

that screen though, love at first sight.
