Ethernet Hub to multiple devices?

I have a question about ethernet splitting/hubs/switches (I don't know my exact terminology so please excuse that).

I have 2 devices that I'd like to connect directly to my modem but the issue is that the modem is down two sets of stairs (total distance is about 126 ft).

I already run 1 cable up to one device but don't want to run a second cable up the stairs as the stairs are high-traffic areas (Roommates and Animals) so I'm wondering if there is a way to have one cable run up into a switch/splitter/hub so that I can have both devices connected directly without having 2 very long cables strewn throughout the house.

Since I don't know my exact terminology I drew up a rough idea of what I'm thinking of -

If what I drew is possible, there are questions from there -

What are the drawbacks of a setup like that? Network strain? High Latency?

Both devices wouldn't be on at the same time, one is a PC and the other is a game console.

Solution
If your "modem" is actually a router/modem (does it have 1 ethernet port or 4? Does it have built in WIFI?) then you can do just what you drew. Put an ethernet switch and connect the two devices to it.

If your "modem" REALLY is just a modem, then instead of a switch, you need a router to connect multiple devices.
