Is it possible to upgrade the graphics on my entry level computer?

Hi,

I'd really appreciate some advice about ways to improve my existing (really rather basic) computer's graphics card. I have a basic motherboard (ASUS P8H61-MX USB3), which only has a single PCI Express (16 3.0) slot.

Currently, the computer has a 1GB RADEON HD6450, which provides some pretty entry level (if that) performance. I was wondering whether there are any sensible graphics cards I could upgrade to? Essentially, what is the best graphics card that will fit this motherboard?

NB, currently only have a 350W PSU, but could upgrade this if the card requires it.

Regards,

Rob

thats not a "entry" level pc your cpu with a better power supply could handle a gtx 1080
get a better psu before a gpu upgrade

Hi Suzuki,

thanks for your rapid response.

The case is a run of the mill 'STYLISH PIANO BLACK ENIGMA MICRO-ATX CASE', the CPU is an i7 Quad Core Processor i7-3770 (3.4GHz) 8MB Cache. Currently, running 8GB Samsung Dual-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 4GB) RAM (but thinking of upping that to 8GB per slot).

Regards,

Rob

Looks like a beast of a PSU that!

Do you think a GTX 970 would fit (after I upgrade the PSU) ? The gtx 1080 is a bit more that I was looking to spend!

I can't find the dimensions of your case, as in what's the biggest GPU it can take. The motherboard isn't the determining factor. The HD 6450 is quite small, so I'm a bit worried. A perfect 1080p entry level card is the GTX 950 mini, or any other variant that's smaller than a micro-ATX motherboard, just to ensure compatibility, due to not knowing the specs of your case.

However, as far as upgrading is concerned, you should wait (if possible) for approx 1 month, because AMD is launching their RX 480 GPU, which has THEORETICAL (not confirmed, but at least faster than R9 380, 380x) performance of a R9 390.

If your budget allows, go all out and buy a new case (doesn't have to be expensive, just offer proper cooling for gaming), a new power supply, and GPU. And if you have some money left over, I would also buy an SSD.

All the best!
