I want to buy the apple airport extreme, I quite liked it's form factor and it matches my setup. I want to know if it's a router or a modem (or even both) and the compatibility, because i don't see any phone cable for it. Do I need a modem?

its a router, your ISP should provide you with a moden, then you can plug in the airport to your modem and it runs as a router. I have a time capsule which doubles as a NAS kinda. I've got it plugged into a VirginMedia SuperHub 2, i've turned off the radio's so that I still have all of the ethernet ports, and then i've got the time capsule (airport extreme), plugged into that via an ethernet cable.

you can, as long as you already have one of them as your main router, so I have an extreme as the main router and then the express' as my extenders. You'd use the router/modem that the ISP provided solely as a modem and nothing else, unless you wanted a separate guest network, but the airport utility has that feature built in.
