How to create a school like logon server at home

Hi guys, i am new here so correct any mistakes i make.
I have a PC at home that has no OS and i was wondering, could i have a server like a school has at home that i can logon to? I have two laptops that (Probably can be connected). I am prepared to do any OS installs.

Are you looking for a free solution (like running Linux, for example) or a Windows (paid) solution? Also, how much storage does your PC have?

FreeNAS and Ubuntu Server are both good solutions for many users. If you can find Windows Home Server 2011, it would fit your needs as well.

Really a matter of how much you want to put into this project.

Sure, you can setup a server at home. Many of us have home servers. What do you want your server to do for you (i.e., game server, file sharing, backups, etc)?

Also, what are the specs for the PC that currently has no OS on it?

The PC has a core i5 3.2GHz boost to 3.6. It has 4GB ddr3 ram.
Yeah i would mostly like to setup the server for file sharing but i am new to servers so i dont know what i am doing.
