Hard drive made weird noises, then stopped working?

Okay so, I had the chance to plug in my hard drive to my new computer via SATA cable to USB and I wanted to look at my documents/files. I tried opening it and it gave me a "Access is denied" error message. I looked online and saw how I can get access to it again. I go to the document properties and I try changing the access so its accessible to "everyone". When I clicked apply and ok, it gave me the same error message and the hard drive started making loud noises. First it was like mechanical screams, then it started tapping a lot, and it just screeched. My documents properties window crashed and I couldn't close it, it went "Properties has stopped working". After 3 minutes the window closed itself and the hard drive stopped making noises, then it started again but the noise was quieter, it was like a high pitched whine that just stayed like that. Then I got a pop up message that said "Malfunctioned/Incorrect device inserted please eject" I took out the USB and tried putting it in again, nothing happened. I'm worried I just destroyed every single one of my old files. Can anyone please help? Can this be recovered?

Can you try hooking up SATA to SATA? From what your describing this sounds like a typical hard drive failure. The Clicks, clacks, and whines are the platters/arm of the drive failing. I went through this a few months ago and was able to save the data by wrapping the drive in paper towels and putting in the freezer for a few hours then tapping it lightly with my hand and hooked it up as a slave drive to another PC using SATA to SATA cable.

This tends to tighten up the metal and you may get 1 good read off it to save what you can. If it's totally failed and won't spin up the only way to save that data would be a recover service.

Would that be safe? I don't want to risk anything that could happen to my PC. Also even if it did work, i'm really worried it will do it again, I don't know how to unlock my documents folder without giving me the "Access is denied" message.

Safe yes. Will it work? No way to tell. Your not going to install the drive.... your simply going to slave it (hook it up with a SATA cable and power. Just make sure there is no frozen condensation on the any of the electrical parts and as for happening again that's a moot point. Your drive has/is failing. (At some point soon it will not even spin up and be totally dead)

You just want to access the data on it one time to save what you can. If it's still under warranty you can send it out for replacement. If not...save what ya can and then destroy it. As for the file access...your getting denied because those files where created by another user (even tho it's you) on another PC. You'll have to take ownership of the folder to move the data.

I use a little registry tool that gives you the option "Take Ownership" on your drop down menu. It can be found here and works with Windows.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

Once that's reg hack is run you'll see an option to "Take Ownership" on your drop down menu when you "right click" the folder. Use that option and it should allow you access to those folders giving you the "Access is denied" message.

Welp, I tried what everyone else told me to try, but it didn't work. It did say it plugged in correctly along with the ding noise, but it never showed up on "This PC" Thanks for your help though.
