Asus Bios Flashback renamer

Hey there

I need to update the BIOS in attempt to safe the failed system that won't post and this is my last hope before sending the motherboard for repair. I have Asus Z87-Pro motherboard. The instruction for BIOS Flashback says to put .cap file in the root of USB drive and then use "File Renamer" to rename this .cap file before it can be used. Back in 2013 I remember using File renamer for my other Asus build, It used to be under Bios Utilities, but now the renames is not available on any drivers lists that I checked, including my older motherboard that used to have it.

I assumed that the instruction is too old and newer BIOS versions do not need to be renamed and this is why they took File Renamer off the web site, but when I try to run BIOS flashback, the green light stays ON as if it still updating. Looks like it can not update. Did you have to use BIOS Flashback- did you use File Renamer?

You can find it under the "driver & tools" > "others" section. https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z87PRO/HelpDesk_Download/
Or you can manual to rename the BIOS file, like Z87P.CAP. And in case you need the info for USB BIOS flashback. Check out the links;

1st for the renamer, in the Driver & Tools section, click "Please select OS" in the bottom list, you will see the "Others" that is the last one.

And after you done the BIOS update, the PC will not POST, may try the bench it fisrt, Bench it - Troubleshooting http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1753671/bench-troubleshooting.html If the pc don't boot at all during the bench it 1st step ( only cpu+ cooler+ using onborad iGPU), that means either the CPU or the MB has problem, if you don't have othe cpu/mb to test, you need go to local PC shop ask for help.

Thanks. I did not do all the steps in "Bench it" thread, but I have everything disconnected, did try 2 different types of memory already. I spoke with Asus and they will take the motherboard for repair, also Intell would take the processor, but I can not decide which one to send. Don't want to send good working part via mail and get back some refurbished part of have it damaged while in transit...

I do have another computer with the same Z87 motherboard (Deluxe) and processor. Should I risk of taking that processor out and put in this one for testing? I have mixed opinions on this. Intel person says- go ahead, test it in another system, if something happens- we will replace both processors. The deluxe motherboard may be off the warranty... If I swap the processors, what is the risk that my other working system becomes unstable? Thank you.

Recommend to check the z87 pro's cpu socket to see there is bent pin or any burnmark ( also under the MB) or not first, also take a look at that cpu too. If the cpu doesn't have any physical damage on the cpu, then go ahead to test that cpu in the z87 deluxe, if that cpu works on the Z87 deluxe, make sure the MB has the BIOS to support that cpu, that means the z87 pro need to replace. If that cpu has problem, then your PC will not boot, and it will not kill your MB.

Thank you for your reply. I guess I am slowly moving toward testing that CPU in Deluxe motherboard. Both CPUs 4770K, so should not need any BIOS updates.

How would I get bent pin- if I did not say it right away- this is not a new build- it worked for almost 2 years. It got shut down by pressing the power button and it never came back on. Sudden death- likely something electrical.

Wow! It POST!!!!

I took it out of the case and it posted. Asking for a boot device.

So what does it mean? Does it mean- the case shorts it some how? Do I need a new case? I also had a fan connected before I took it out of the case...

One more thing... there is a connector that connects the case power button to the motherboard- the power switch. Can it be an issue? That would make sense as the computer malfunctioned when the power was pressed, so if this is the power connector pins on the motherboard... Now I have it disconnected and powering it by pressing the power button on the motherboard. Does it makes any sense?

Check the bent pin or not, usually you have unknow problem that caused pc does not boot. In your case it looks like the case problem, because you can boot the pc outside the case. Yes, you can prees that power button to see the pc can power or not, if it does, and check the motherboard standoffs first, because the Mb shorting or wriing problem will cause the same proble, too.
You may try install the MB back to the case, unplus all the front panel wires, and short the PWR pins with a screw driver to start the PC, if the pc can boot, that means the case wiring has problem, you will need the new case.

I know now exactly what is wrong. It is a place where the wires from the power button on the case connect to the motherboard. Now I have to figure out if it is the case wires shortage or if it is a shortage on the motherboard pins. I have a feeling that these are the pins on the motherboard, not the wires on the case. How would I test it? Thank you.
