SSD Drive Reliability
Hello Gents,

I’m currently building a new budget system and picked out a SSD to house the Windows 7 64bit OS on but after delving deeper into the reviews and doing some research I have some concerns about the reliability of these units and especially the sub $100 ones. At current I’m looking at the 250GB models that are between $60-$80 and I can use some advice on which model in that price range you would trust to hold the OS.

Most have 3 year warranties but it’s not really the hassle of RMA a unit that malfunctions but reinstalling the OS and files every time it does. It seems quite a few of these lower end SSD’s have a higher failure rate due to them using a cheaper chipset to lower costs and the failures have a window of a month or two to a year or so. As it will only house the OS I don’t want to buy a top of the line Samsung or spend more the $80 to get a better model so I’m wondering which sub $80 is the best buy for reliability of use or is there one?. Here are the 3 models I’m looking at.

I’ve had mechanical HD’s fail over the years but it’s usually over the 5 year to 8 year marks and I’m trying to avoid early failures on the drives holding the OS. While some of the reviews on these models look good to fair in the reviews if you research the entire web you start to see the failure pattern.

Advice please?
Other models I might consider?

*Worst case I'll just by a standard HD for the system*

Thanks!

Agreed but the pattern is wide spread. I was looking at a Mushkin drive that was released about 6 months ago on one of the sites 'Newegg' i think and it had an very high failure rate as there was something amiss in the firmware. Another from a few years ago concerned Kingston replacing the synchronous NAND with asynchronous NAND chips and cover it up "Lawsuit in Progress" which slowed data rates and increased failure rates.

Anyway that's kind of why I'm looking for advice from people here that have been running these SDD's for awhile to recommend a brand/model in my price range to give me a starting point.

Done RAID before on standard HD's but I'm looking for SSD's reliability not overly concerned about back up as that is a given. Want to avoid purchasing a model that fails every 3-6 months lol.

I could not find any current failure rates as the manufacture will want to keep those numbers quiet. But what I'm concerned about is a study like this done last year where the failure rate across all SSD's was 27% and test from extreamtech showed 4 of 6 drives failed.

Since this is my first SSD I'm trying to be informed to prevent a bad experience that turns me off the SSD purchases in the future so I'm reluctant to pull the trigger on just any SSD.

Thank's for your input USAFRet.

I was also considering that drive and would be a good choice if they can fix the cell decay problem that the 840 had but they have not yet with the NAND 3bit MLC chipset. Over time as the data is written the cells become slow and the write speeds can drop below 80mb/s (average is 200mb/s). They did a firmware update to address this issue but according to a few SSD tech sites it's starting to show it's ugly head again in the 850 line.

Still might be an option though :O)

The 850 EVO does not have the issue. The drive has been out for about almost 2 years and i'm active/lurk on many SSD forums and i can count on my hands the number of ppl that have "reported" the issue on the 850 EVO, which was usually found to be caused by something else.
