Can't get past POST screen with new ram (same specs as old ram, but 2x4gb instead of old 2x2gb).

I'm trying to upgrade my PC from a set of 2x2gb ram to a set of 2x4gb ram. I made sure that the specs of the ram are the same (1333mhz, CL9, V1.5), but I can't get past the POST screen with the 2x4gb ram installed. Or even a single 4gb stick for that matter.

With both sticks of 4gb ram inserted, my PC says that it detects 3gb of ram on the POST screen, and from there it stops. I can hit DEL/F12 to attempt to get into the BIOS/Boot Menu, but the POST screen will say something like "8gb of team detected, now loading and configuring usb ports" and it will freeze there.

One stick of 4gb ram inserted will make the PC display "1gb of ram detected" on the POST screen, but it freezes there.

The Crucial System Scanner says that my mobo has 4 ram slots and can take up to 16gb of ram in total, so I don't understand why my ram doesn't work. I made sure that the ram was inserted in the correct slots and that the ram locks on the mobo were properly secured.

My mobo is a Gateway DX4840, and I'm not sure what version of my BIOS to update to. According to CPU-Z, my current BIOS is dated to 05/17/2010. On the manufacturer's page for BIOS downloads for my mobo, it looks like this: http://puu.sh/phRPH/17c7ce694b.png so I assume that I probably should update my BIOS. However, the latest version says "BIOS for Linux" so I'm not sure if I should download that BIOS or the second latest BIOS update.
