Hello,
I have recently been experiencing problems with my Sky internet (Sky hub SR101). My first issue is that when someone is downloading something or hosting something such as a server for a game (such as Cube World), everything else will go offline and only the thing that is downloading/the server will receive normal internet speeds. Skype and steam will go offline and nobody will be able to even load google yet the download/server receives full internet speeds (which isn't very fast in the first place to be honest).I understand that the internet will be slower for other people when something is downloading or a server is being hosted, but surely it shouldn't make everything completely die? I used to be able to host a Cube World server no problem and still go on Skype to my friends however now my internet seems like it cant handle it. There is no way to access any QoS settings on my router (thanks sky) which is what another guy told me to do so i am really confused.

So my second sort of problem is that I have recently been able to try using Ethernet instead of WiFi as I was told it is much faster. However when I am downloading games etc, it is actually slower than the WiFi. My WiFi will get a peak speed of about 2.1 Mbps and if its in a happy mood then maybe 2.3 Mbps but when using Ethernet im only getting 1.7 Mbps. I know its not really much of a difference but I was wondering: is this normal? Surely the Ethernet should be getting higher speeds. It could be because im using the Ethernet through a power-line adapted but im not sure so please can someone clear this up for me. Thank you in advance!

With respect to your first problem:

Overall your internet/network services will only be as fast as the slowest path therein. And anything that further chokes up or slows the path will reduce speeds. Could be hardware, software, poor physical connections, failing devices, misconfigured devices (user error or some default upgrade setting). Does not take much to have speeds fall to unusable levels.

You can start addressing that by testing your network and devices. Shut down all but one device and the start adding back devices one by one. Run applications, stream, download etc.. Try to identify where and when the download speeds degrade. Tedious but necessary.

Could also be that the service line to your residence has degraded - outside cables and splitters will corrode, crack, get wet and physically experience more interference slowing your speeds. Take a look around and inspect as much as you can. Look for damage, corrosion, kinks, rodent chews, unexplained connections, any physical damage.

Second question:

Wired is normally faster than wireless. However, low quality ethernet cables will slow things down. Going through powerline adapters certainly can do the same as their performance is very much based on the quality of your residence's electrical circuits. And if you are also using power strips or extension cords then that can make powerline adapters performance even worse. Again, you can test just by changing circuits, temporarily running a long, known-working ethernet cable.

Hi thank you for replying so fast - I wasn't expecting a response until about next week. As for testing the outside cables n all it will be hard to do currently however I will try to in the future. My powerline adapter isn't connected through an extension cable so it isnt that and I may try purchasing a faster ethernet cable off amazon. Il let you know when I have tried that to see if it is any better. Thanks!
