I have Dish network as my internet provider and every month I have gone over my usage. I have called them and asked why I am going over every month and the say that it's coming from my house. All the computers that are here have Windows Update turned off, we don't stream movies or music, don't download music the most we ever do is check Facebook, email and shop online. Every computer has virus protection. I've called Dish network and they tell me that the high usage is from file transfers and updates. I've had the router replaced three times and still the same issue. I live out in a rural area and no one close enough to back in to my system. Is it possible that someone could have gotten my IP address and be sucking off my signal from a different location? With in the last few days the internet usage has maxed out to 100%. Every time I call they tell me it's coming from my house. The other day I got a 60% usage warnin, the next day my usage was up to 80% the day after was 100%, with my billing cycle not even half done for the month. Is it possible that someone around here is on my account with the same IP address?

Forgive me for all the questions but I'm at my wits end because of this. Dish network really has no answers and I'm trying to find out what is going one. We don't use the internet all day and night. And we turn off every computer when are not using them. There are two Android phone that are not on the network, no password has been enetered in the Wi-Fi setting in and of the phones.

Please help.

Unfortunately, with respect to the circumstances you describe, about the only thing you can do is keep calling Dish and try to escalate the matter to someone knowledgeable and in authority.

Even if you unplug for a month, Dish is likely to still hold you accountable....

What happens is that there are so many people out there scamming, stealing ISP support that the ISPs pretty much say it is the home owner despite all reason and logic. (Telephone companies have sort of done the same for many years with respect to long distance call charges, etc..) Even if you lose electrical power for a week, they will still say it is your doing....

And the average over-worked, under-trained help desk person cannot go beyond the scripted responses they have and are rarely empowered to fix anything much beyond simple "is it plugged in" stuff.

Take a close look your bills and equipment list. See if the barcodes and device serial numbers that you have match your bill.

See if Dish will refresh your IP address - run "what is my IP" to find out what address you have and make sure that it gets changed.

Keep good notes about all of your calls, date/time, who you spoke with, and what was or was not done.

Any consumer advocate groups in your area? Try to find someone as an ally. Do you know any other Dish subscribers in your area - are they having problems? Talk to people about the problems but keep those discussions honest and objective. Quantify the facts. You may find someone around who has been through the same thing and found a solution.

And hopefully someone else here will be able to offer further suggestions.

I imagine it would be possible to spoof a satellite internet account, but you should make an attempt to monitor your household bandwidth usage as proof to your ISP.

Monitoring from each individual computer can be done, but is tedious. A real time monitor is available in Windows Resource Monitor, but historical data usage requires third party software be installed on each computer.

Some routers also provide network usage statistics, and third party firmware (e.g. DD-WRT) may be available for your router that provides more detailed and long term usage data.
