Hello guys

I have an intel pentium g3220 and a zotac gtx 650 ti AMP! edition installed in my pc.
Now (because of the low prices) i want to buy a gtx 970 to play games like
DOOM 4, Dark Souls 3, Battlefield 1 and Monster Hunter Online at medium (to high) graphic settings.

My question is will my CPU or the gtx 970 get damaged/destroyed because of the bottleneck?

I know that the gtx 970 can´t use her full power because of the weak CPU but will anything else happen or should I buy a new cpu like the i5 4690K

Solution
If you want to play the games and if the game's specifications require (for the "full experience') that you have the gtx970 then you would need to have the gtx970 as well.

The only way to be sure is to compare the games' individual requirements to the gtx 650 and the gtx 970 respective specifications. Maybe the gtx 650 will allow full play of 80% of your games. And you might not like the other 20% of the games all that much..... Prioritize your gaming preferences.

And consider this: if you replace the CPU and continue to use the known working gtx 650 any problems could, within reason, be attributable to the new CPU. But if all works and then you later install the gtx 970 any problems could, again within reason, be attributed...

I would not expect anything else to happen barring some really unusual circumstances - would just be slow.

That said I would avoid the matter all together and just buy the new CPU. You will probably end up doing that anyway so do not inhibit the performance and lost time with a weak CPU.

I.e., the classic "change only one thing at a time" approach. Problem with installs is that more than one thing gets changed, hardware, software/drivers, other configuration settings. But you do have the ablility to minimize the changes to some degree.

Becomes sort of a personal assessment of the trade-offs and possible risks that you are willing to make and take.

Decide, do it, hope for the best, and enjoy.
