This is my first post and hope you can help me here. I have an old HP Pavilion (P6516f-b) and I'm trying to replace mobo with ASUS M5A78L-M I've been able to swap the boards physically but I seem to have few problems ..

1. The power switch and HDD LED: There are two cables that come from the front panel and I'm not exactly where they two cables are supposed to -- I can't find a matching plug for these two.

2. I have located the CPU fan plug but I can't seem to find plug for the chassis fan.

3. ASUS has 24 ping mobo power connector vs hp with 20, so, four slots remain open.

Given all these - I'm wondering
a. If I purchased the wrong mobo ?
b. If the mobo is compatible, is there a solution to the above three ?

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciate.

Just looking at the HP motherboard I can see it has a 24 pin ATX connection. not 20 pin. Since motherboards before PCI express used 20 pin power supplies. When PCI express x 16 became available, four more pins were added to power the PCI express x 16 slot. If no graphic card was used, you could use a 20 pin power supply.

The proprietary HP front panel connector is not used on retail boxed motherboards. You need to remove the wires from the connector.

The Asus motherboard specifications:
1 x CPU Fan connector(s)
1 x Chassis Fan connector(s)

Try downloading and reading the motherboard manual if you are assembling a PC.

Thanks Calvin! Very helpful. I have plugged 20 pin connector to the mobo 24-pin onboard connector. Thanks for the manual, I have managed to locate the chassis fan. Perhaps by luck and after reading your link (power switch) i have traced the two red-wire (on/off) and shifted the connector so that it sits on the right pins and that seems to work (able to switch on/off the computer); however, I do need to find the right cable for the sake of the LED (and avoid possible damage). Any suggestions which cables/connectors I should purchase?

One other thing I have noticed is that -- when i switch it on, the CPU fan is running at full speed from the start. Looking at the pins closely, my CPU FAN has 3-pins vs the on-board 4-pin ? Does this mean I have to purchase a new CPU FAN ?
