Hey, So just bought a brand new XFX R9 390X and installed it into my computer everything went well at first. The computer turned on; I installed the drivers and then went to play a game. After about 10 minutes into the game my computer shut off without warning, and did not turn back on. There was a odd smell coming from the case but it wasn't a burning smell. Now when i turn my computer on all i get is a black screen. I have already tried putting in my old card and i still get a black screen.

My specs are:

CPU: intel 3820 3.6 ghz
MB: P9X79LE
Ram: 16gb corsair vengeance 4X4
New GPU: xfx r9 390x
Old GPU: PCS HD7870
PSU: Solid Gear SDGR-800SC (800 watts)

Solution
First, make sure you use the correct power plugs placed on your new GPU (and check if everything is correct). Then try again to run. If it doesn't work, probably your PSU is the culprit (because it doesn't seem to be a decent unit at all and probably it's a low quality one that can't handle your new card). And maybe your display cable is not seated properly?

I tried the other set of 8pin / 6pin connectors coming from my PSU and reconnected the display cables. However, im still getting a black screen.

What im confused about is the board and GPU "appear" to be getting power so what could be potentially wrong with the PSU exactly

Let's try something. Where's your old GPU? can you swap GPUS and try to boot with your old GPU? This is an easy way to check and have an idea of what could be causing the problem. By the way when you boot up with the new card, do you see your HDD lights blink or the entire system halts?

A smell like that normally means that there is either a issue with your PSU or RAM, if your mobo and graphics card are getting power it may be a ram issue

Thanks for quick responses. So I've tried both GPU's now and when either one is plugged in and the system is turned on the HDD light remains off and the screen remains black.
