Hi, I have a AMD X4 860K overclocked to 4.0 Ghz, and a xFx R9 390. I know the graphics card is good enough to be able to run a VR headset, but I was wondering if I would need to get a new CPU.

Thanks!

Depends on the game in a cpu heavy title I doubt it. The HTC vive runs at a resolution of 2160x1200 and you need to achieve 90fps to avoid motion sickness, which is no easy task for most systems. Some games you will likely be okay others maybe not, im not really sure how performance hungry VR games are.
The official specs want an i5 4590, which is quite a bit more powerful than the 860k. That said those are just estimated specs so it'll depend on the game in question (heck you can run basic VR on a smartphone using a google cardboard viewer, it's just a case of *what* you're trying to do with it).

What might be worth trying is this:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/323910/

That will run your machine through it's paces and was created for the vive.

There really isn't any, an AM3+ cpu like the 8350 would be better than the 860k. But your cpu is socket FM2+ an AM3+ CPU like 8350 wont fit in your motherboard. As far as im aware the 860k is pretty much the best cpu on socket FM2+.

Well AMD don't have a good counter really- the FX8350 is probably you're best bet. That said the upcoming AMD Zen processors come out later this year and hopefully should be a big improvement. The current FX range isn't really all that competitive on Intel (it wasn't bad when it came out but it's old).
