the CPU and Case fans reach normal speed
no LED code activity - no beeps - no video output

using onboard video chip

Thanks for the response, but as I said, I've done (almost) all of that, and more.

Forgot to mention, the LED display that normally indicates progress during boot up is showing nothing during boot attempts. It had been working perfectly.

Since it ran for a week without issues I doubt the MoBo has moved enough to touch the case - and I did do a visual check. I'm hoping someone will come up with something by tomorrow. Still waiting to hear from Gigabyte... When I disassemble the system to RMA the mobo, I WILL check the CPU and isolate the mobo, but I don't really expect that will cure the problems.

I've run out of things to try...so I RMA'd it today.

While installing the CPU slots protective cover I managed to bend some pins. How's that for irony? Hopefully, they'll still accept the return...

Thanks for the crossed fingers. I tried to straighten the pins, but it's still obvious to anyone who bothers to look.

If they balk, I'm going to tell them the pins were fine until I put their cap on the socket as they ask you to do. There are no instructions in the manual for doing this, and the cap does not go on easily.

I'll ask them to return the board to me, then I'll send it to Gigabyte to replace the socket. If the board is still defective then the pins were not the problem and I'll ask for a new board.

That will be quite a pain, but I know the pins were not the problem because I only removed the CPU when it died after running a week. Also, it had the SATA ports problem which I reported to Gigabyte before the board died.

After 4 days of waiting, Gigabyte responded to my report. All they did was ask questions whose answers I had already provided. They obviously did not read ANY of the info I provided...

NOT impressed!
