I am looking for the free(iest) and easiest way to transfer Windows from my old HDD to my new SSD (250GB) I recently bought. All I want is to boot from Windows and make Windows very quick.

Solution

How much total used space is on the current C drive? Going into a 250GB SSD, it must be below 200GB
How much of that used space is doc/music/funny cat videos?
How much of that is Steam games
Do you have another drive with some frr space on it?

Procedures? I just wrote this for another thread about this:
-----------------------------
1. Instal the data migration software
2. Power off, connect the SSD
3. Disconnect any other drive, except the new SSD and the current C drive
4. Power up
5. Run the [strike]Data Migration[/strike] software of your choice...
Actually, you can reddwarf45, and it's called cloning. It makes a perfect copy of the system including the booting bits.

EaseUS has a product named Disk Copy and that's a free utility but others are available, free or paid for. Acronis True Image is a good choice but it wlil cost you. Don't go for a cheap e-Bay copy of the 2014 version - it won't work on Windows 10.

If you take up my advice, it's important to remember to remove or disconnect the original hard disk when the cloning process completes. Booting the system with two hard drives, both claiming to be C:\ will result in much confusion.

Once the SSD has booted you could add in the hard disk and wipe the folders and fles you don't need and keep your personal stuff as a backup.

6. At the end of the process, power off
7. Disconnect the old drive
7b. Swap the SATA connections around, so that the new drive is in the same SATA port as the original one was.
8. Power up. You may need to verify the boot order in the BIOS.
9. Assuming everything went OK, it should boot exactly as before, just now on the SSD
10. You may want to power off and on a couple of times, just to be sure.
11. Reconnect the old HDD, and wipe it. Use as needed.

USAFRet, Thanks. I was looking through youtube and I encountered something about Samsung Data Migration. You just made my life easier thanks man! And I also bought a 1tb HDD so I can move most of my files from my old HDD.

@USAFRET
You may want to add to your instructions to replace the old drive with the newly cloned ssd in the original location.
I have found that sometimes this step is necessary for proper booting. Changing the bios boot order is not always sufficient.

True. Same SATA port as the original.

That only works with Samsung drives. But it is good. I've used it.
