I am looking for a computer that can render and work 3ds max. for $400 and $500. Preferably to build one myself to save money. It does not need to be able to render at intense speed. Just be able to work 3ds max easily. So 8 gigabytes of ram is needed and a cpu that can work 3ds max. It will be just to use 3ds max not render. We have other computers that can render easily.

I assumed you needed an OS as well:

Nice to have 16gb of RAM, just in case, as well as SSDs for the OS and to work/scratch on. The FX's do make decent workstations for the money.....

If they've got access to a rendering platform and all they need is the design environment...well it doesn't take a whole lot. Portability can be handy.

With a little more budget I would go search out an i7- MQ/HQ/QX etc. The speed difference between that and a desktop i7 is only the max clock speed, the architecture is the same.

I picked up a Lenovo i7-4700MQ with a GT740M a few years back for around $800. Dropped an SSD in and it has been quite the workhorse.
