SLI Bridges are still required for the cards to be able to synchronize, however there really is no reason to use 3 1080's for 3 monitors, 2 of them would run 3 monitors no problem. The reason Nvidia no longer supports it is due to diminishing returns. Anyway the only reason to not use SLI bridges is if you planned on 3 independent signals, all the time.
He wants to use 3 1080's, because he is going to be using 3 2k monitors, 144 Hz
2 1080's will run 3 monitors like that no problem at all, 3 is really overkill as said below you maybe will get 20% more performance for $700, not worth it at all.

Sli bridge is a must, and you dont need 3 gpus for 3 monitors. 2 1080s on sli is enough as 3 will be not worth it at all for the almost 20% performance ur gonna get (in 1 out of 8 games). and nvidia do support 2 and 3 way sli on the 1080s, those you read that they dont are just rumors.
Out of the box it only supports 2 way, to get 3 or 4 way you need to contact Nvidia for an unlock code, thats why this keeps coming up. Nvidia is trying to direct people away from it because its such a waste.
