Windows Computer Won't Boot (No Display)

Hello.

My computer turned off today and will not boot. I was in the middle of a game, the screen went black and the audio cut out. Now there is nothing.

The USB devices do not get power (keyboard, mouse). The motherboard is powered, the CPU has power, the Graphics Card has power and the PSU appears to be running. My case fans will turn on and so will the lights on my case.

When I turn the computer on there is nothing displayed.

For some of the specs:

Windows 10 x64
AMD R9 290x
AMD FX-8350 cpu with a coolemaster cooler I bought.
750W gold power supply
MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard
2 8GB RAM sticks (16gb in total)

I generally monitor my temps. Keeping my CPU below 50c and my GPU below 80c. Though the r9 is a very hot card. I tried swapping in my old GPU to see if the GPU was the issue, but no dice. At this point I assume it is the motherboard, CPU or perhaps something else. Everything is plugged in properly. Once the power button is pressed it will turn on and stay on. But no display.

I'm looking to you for advice on perhaps how to test what might have failed and anything you can suggest would be swell. If you have any other questions let me know, I will try to answer them.

THANKS!

Solution
Yes that is the jumper I was referring to and yes when I said short it out I meant take a metal object and literally short it out. (Jumper is just a generic term for the pins it's not literally a jumper).

Just place the screw drriver in such a way that it grounds both pins together for 5 seconds. CMOS should be fully reset after.

I did the CMOS reset by removing the battery if that is sufficient. I have a JBAT1 on my motherboard, but the manual doesn't exactly explain how else to reset it without removing the battery and shorting it. Where the battery is smells really burnt, not sure if that is normal. I didn't notice a burning smell near the CPU.

Okay. So I swapped in my old power supply and graphics card that I had before. A 530W card and an old AMD HD 6770 and it still won't boot. Everything has power but still no display. I'm not sure if this means that my PSU and GPU are fine, but could it be my motherboard then?

Not really sufficient on newer motherboard unless the battery was out for 20 minutes. The proper prodecure is to use the jumper located near the battery. Short it out for 5 seconds with power cable removed and system discharged.

You got me curious so I pulled out my battery on my 6300 build and smelt no burning smell. You might have a cause for concern there.

It's not looking good for the motherboard..Try the full CMOS reset. don't give up just yet.

Ok so as far as I can tell. I do not have a jumper? I assume this is something that should be on the motherboard. I will post two photos to show you what my manual says and the motherboard. The alternative way is to short it with a screwdriver? Do you know exactly how that works.

Perhaps it was something that should have come in the box. But I have the original box and cannot find anything.

Alright thanks very much! That seemed to do the trick. I plugged it all back in and it booted up normally. Thanks very much for your help :) I am so glad nothing was fried. They are all very new parts (<6 months).

You're welcome. Keep on eye on temps for the next while just in case somethings up.

Hey hate to bother you again. I am now having an issue with my CPU. It appears as having its full capability as before. But now it will max out to 90-100% without heating up. Before when I ran a game it would usually come up to 40-45c and keep up fine. But now the temp stays at 15c and the game framerate is noticeably worse. I assume this is something to do with the CMOS reset, as before I haven't had this issue. Any tips? I am lost.

Yes more than likely. Can you try rebooting, going into BIOS and looking for something along the lines of "Load optimized defaults" or load optimal settings. There's a chance that right now you're running at a lower speed than it should be.

Tried that and nothing. I have two conflicting readings now. The task manager says its running at 30% usage but my SpeedFan is showing all cores running at 80-90%. But it usually heats up, whereas it says its staying consistently at 15c. The game I'm testing is still having huge framerate issues.

Okay in the resource monitor it is saying that the CPU maximum frequency is at 33% which I don't think is normal. It appears to be limiting its utilization. Is this changed in the BIOS settings?

Were you overclocked before by chance before? If not, you should go through your BIOS settings to make sure everything is set right. Things like CPU multiplier, bus speed, memory speeds. Make sure they all match what your components are The AMD FX setup is pretty straight forward though. The BIOS should automatically get your settings right it's hard to say exactly what's going on.

I'm hoping that crash wasn't the result of something being surged..I can't see it though because we got it booted right.

Mmmm...33% you say...Is it by chance not detecting all 8 cores? Maybe find that setting. It's probably in CPU core features in the BIOS. Also make sure your windows power plan is at high performance.

It appears to be detecting all cores. But the voltage is all messed up. Here's a picture of my AMD overdrive. The voltage is not hitting the required amount. Its only at 0.9v when it should be at 1.35v

That's normal voltage to be honest as the 8350 drops down when idle

I'm kind of stumped, like I said the BIOS should detect proper values.

I know there's a "slow mode" switch on those boards somewhere. You didn't flick that accidentally while doing the BIOS stuff right? It forced the clock speed to stay low.

It's right above the SATA ports. Try flicking that and check the results.

Oh good lord okay. I must have knocked the slow mode switch. My graphics card is a real tight fit and I must have hit that switch. That was the trick. Everything is fine now. Thanks so much! I appreciate the continued help :)
