I have a WD ebook external hard drive that I've connected to several different computers via USB, and none of them will recognize it. Obviously, there is some sort of malfunction with the drive, but I need information on how I can go about recovering the files.

The drive doesn't make any noises or anything, it just cannot be recognized by Windows, and uses drivers that are already installed on Windows OS.

Hi there brendannelson,

That is really unpleasant. :(

So the device is not powering up and it is not making any noises at all?
Have you tried using another cable? In case you've tried that, then you will need to look for some professional help, if the data stored on the drive is extremely important. You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=GMr6Bf

Taking the drive out of the enclosure may not work. Depending on the model, the device could have proprietary connectors and hardware encryption. Basically, you will not be able to get the data unless the drive is in the enclosure.

Let me know in case you have some more questions,
