Okay, I am at a friends house helping to build his pc. it got built fine, installed Windows fine and it all seemed fine until he played a game for a while and the computer black screened and became completely unresponsive, tried to enter the BIOS but it crashes to a black screen every time. Took out the CMOS battery for a while to try and reset the BIOS but the same problem occurs AND after the splash screen rolls by it crashes to an unresponsive black screen.
The computer doesn't smell like anything has broken, but smelling the PSU made us light-headed?

His specs:
Radeon r9 380x
Gigabyte 970a-ds3p
Amd fx 8320 BE
8gb of corsair vengeance lp ram @ 1600mhz
2000gb seagate barracuda 7200rpm HDD
Corsair CX 600 watt builders series PSU

With those specs, you're really pushing the threshold of what that CX unit from Corsair can output with the processor in itself consuming 125W of the power in your system while your GPU can pull upto 300W's. If you're unable to get into BIOS or experience a power outage in the middle of you accessing BIOS then it's a PSU issue.

You haven't stated the OS with which you used to boot into your desktop. Have you also tried borrowing a reliable/branded/robust unit of similar or slightly higher wattage like a 650W unit and seen if the issue is yet apparent?
