Hi everyone. My friend received this quote for a PC from a local computer shop for his business. All he will be doing on this computer is running Microsoft Office. What do you think?

Total: $1260

Dell Optiplex minitower
i7-6700
8gb ram
AMD Radeon R5 340X 2GB w/ DisplayPort and DVI-I
500gb Serial ATA
Windows 7 pro 64bit
Office Home & Business
No monitor included

The quote does not say anything about labor. I am not sure if that is included in the total or not. Is he getting ripped off here?

Thanks!

Well office + Windows = $330
I7-6700 = $350
R5 340X (weak graphics card) ~$70
motherboard + crappy PSU = $70
HDD = $40
RAM = $30

= $890

Yeah, very bad deal. Plus they probably get Windows and Office in bulk and cheaper. You could build your own rig and get better stuff for the money. What goes on at this business? Is a GPU really needed? I understand it's not logical to build a bunch of computers for a business (one would be smart). But there would be better options like off-the-shelf Dell and HP machines.

For Microsoft Office use, go to your local stores and buy a dirt cheap Dell or HP computer, and there you go, all perfectly fine.

If buying a Dell why not buy direct, they have numerous deals and customisations available on their website.
For personal use I'd have one made to order or make it myself, but most companies prefer to buy a name brand machine with a warranty and support.
Also agree with others, i7 is overkill and there's no need for a graphics card at all for an office machine.

My Business PC is an i5 based surface pro with a docking station and that's overkill for office as well. All you really need is virtually any current machine.
For something a bit different you could get an i3 or i5 based intel NUC for that price and save a lot of desk space - they can even mount to the back of the monitor if required. I think they are a great option for an office environment personally.

Forgetting for a moment that Dell gets the software / OS for much cheaper than any of us can, here's that build with a few upgrades, has to be kept in mind that $300 is OS and Software.. take out the unneeded GFZX card and there's $100 off ... drop the CPU to a 6100 and save another $215

As above it's a $650 machine with $300 worth of software. Without unnecesary stuff, its could be a $355 machine, with $300 worth of software

Or throw in an SSD, probably best for an office machine.

if it will allow the link this is a over priced Del with same config straight from their website. I would assume this is the USA website and ouch it is like $1724 after the savings of $647 actual price $2371 from them. He could build a machine much cheaper than his quote or the price I got from the website.

Ok I tested the link I gave it goes straight to the main page for the system & at the base price without the extra's like Office & the extra 4GB ram & the radeon video card but still it starts out at $1080 this can't be US price because it is a total rip off..lol

We have tested this every way from Sunday and there's just no payoff... not when SSHDs are on the table.

1. Boot Times on same system ...

SSD = 15.6 seconds
SSHD = 16.5 seconds

2. The SSD doesn't do anything for what is on the HD.

3. Unsavvy Windows users wind up calling in help (costing $$) when SSD gets full.

4. As a test we bought two laptops, both custom built for use by field engineers using AutoCAD

- One had a 120 GB SSD + 7200 rpm HD
- One had a 7200 rpm SSHD

No one could tell the difference ... well I did, I'd have to clean the junk off the SSD every few months.

5. The desktop test was on a box w/ two 256 GB SSDs, two 2 TB SSHDs and a 7200 rpm HD. We had it set up to boot off either of the 3 different devices and even to play games, off the different devices. About half noticed when switched to the HD ... no one ever detected a difference between the SSD and SSHD.

Also doesn't really matter ... I had an employee ask me for an SSD to improve his productivity and I told him to "make a case for it".

he said ... booting takes a minute, SSD would take 15 seconds.

doing the math ... and using real numbers, it was 21.2 for the HD and 15.6 for the SSD

5.6 seconds x 220 work days per year = 0.34 hours per year ... or 1 hour after 3 years ... he costs about $20 an hour with all overhead and bennies so ... I asked him to find one for $20.

The reality is ... he came in in the morning , took of jacket, turned on PC ... went over to coffee machine .. [insert rest of morning ritual here] and sat down at his desk where it already was in sleep mode having been sitting idle for 10 minutes. Nope, no SSD value here :)

Yea I know it starts out at $1089 but once you add in the same specs and office it climbs to $2371 with some sort of savings thing it comes out to $1725 after the $647 savings and they think (Dell) that they are giving you a great price...lol

Thank you all so much! You would not believe what this company has been doing to my friend. He has been working with them for years. Today they installed office home and business on the computer for $300. He only needs Excel, Word, and Outlook. UNBELIEVABLE! They are taking advantage of him.

Well you better tell your friend he's getting ripped off, or if he isn't convinced, to come here.

He will be using it for Excel, Word, and Outlook.
