Hello, im noot too up to date with PC hardware.. currently I got I7 950k with 12gb of ram and 12gb of ram. With my GTx 970 it does well in games but having done some big video projects recently, I see that my rig is geting a bit old and slow compared to what I use in college, therefore im looking to upgrade my CPU and since its old socket motherboard and ram will have to go aswell.. any sugestion for something a university student can afford and will be a decent upgrade from what i got now ?

You acn still use the old RAM, it's just slower than "modern" RAM, no big deal to be honest with you. Rather keep it than buying more.

As for the rest of your question, nobody can answer that unless we know what software and what type of projects you're working with.

A good choice is a Xeon 1231, great for gaming, great for editing. You won't need an expensive motherboard at all.

If you need faster drives, beyond Sata 3, then you can raid two SSD's, or just upgrade your whole system, apart from the GPU, case, PSU.

All the best!
What do you consider cheap? The i7 950K will be pretty close to a modern i5 in multithreaded performance, which is a $200 CPU. You might consider dropping in an eBay-special 6 core 1366 Xeon for some extra multithreaded performance; that wouldn't require that you change your motherboard.

sadly the prices of those cpus have been rising the last year and its almost cheaper to get a new mobo with a new cpu as opposed to say a x5690
