So i have a build from a local computer store that had an amd phenom II X4 955 quad core that i upgraded to an fx 6300. when trying to power it up all the fans and LEDs turn on but nothing appears on my monitor. Also the laser for my mouse just blinks instead of staying lit. any ideas on what can be causing this?

full build specs before cpu upgrade:
MSI 890FXA-GD70 mobo
AMD Phenom II X4 955 QuadCore cpu
R9 380 gpu
Logisys 550w Max Output psu

Solution
The other thing is that the Phenom 955 is actually faster per core than the FX-6300 so you see some things run faster and others slower when you do get it to run.. The FX supports newer instruction sets which can help in some workloads. Basically don't expect an upgrade so much as a side grade IMO. Yes your board supports the FX cpu but it might need a BIOS update.

Does the FX6300 appear on the CPU support list for your motherboard?

What is your motherboard?

I'm assuming you've checked for bent pints on the CPU and motherboard?

Chances are you either need a BIOS update to enable support, or you have a motherboard that does not support the FX.

EDIT: You were updating as I was posting. You're motherboard supports the chip. If there's not physical damage to the chip of socket, I'd suggest updating your BIOS with the latest version (reinstall the Phenom to do this) and see if the results change.

I'll have to wait till tomorrow to check the phenom back in. I'm thinking it's something to do with the psu but i'm not entirely sure. i'll be taking it back up there and having him look at it.

A Logisys PSU is to blame in 99% of situations, but considering the FX has lower power requirements than the Phenom, it may not be at fault in this case (assuming it still works with the Phenom installed, of course).

I'd recommend replacing the PSU ASAP anyway, as Logisys are junk - protect your investment.

the phenom 955 was bottlenecking the gpu so i was more or less looking for a way to let more power come from it. im going back up there tomorrow to see what he thinks about it. ill ask him to update the bios while im there i guess

The phenom cores are about the same power as an FX core . The FX 6300 has two more so it is definitely the more powerful processor of these two, by a 50% margin

The mb may need a BIOS update to run the FX processor. Swap the Phenom back in , update the BIOS following the instructions exactly and then swap the FX back in .

Not quite.. The FX core is weaker than the 955 Deneb's Stars core. The 6 core FX-6300 is faster in some things and slower in others compared to the 4 core Phenom II X4-955. It is FACT. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/88?vs=699 All I was trying to say is if I was to upgrade a 955 it would not be to a 6300 as I view it as a sidegrade rather than an upgrade. I do hope he gets it to work once his BIOS is upgraded but I would have gone with an 8 core FX-8370 if I was to upgrade due to the fact that it actually kicks the 955's butt in multithread and with a 4.0+Ghz core speed so it can keep up on single thread for the most part however I am kinda iffy on his board due to the VRM setup to run an 8 core FX.
