is BIOS active past the boot sequence? By trial and error, one step at a time, I am trying to understand if computer freezes might have anything to do with it.

Thank you Ironsounds for taking the time to pick this up and post. Unfortunately, sometimes between my post and yours, my laptop stopped even initiating the boot sequence. I decided to try one last thing to determine whether it is the motherboard or the HDD that is at fault. So, I replaced the 2 HDD's with 2 SSD's thinking that I can reuse them on the new computer, should my undertaking fail.

With the new SSD's installed, I booted from the recovery disks. Around at 93% of Windows installation the computer froze. In my view, this shows for sure that it is the motherboard that went kaput. After 6 full years of really heavy ArchiCAD work, my trusted HP Pavillion dv8 has finally lowered its flag.

The trouble is, there are no systems out there with 18+ inch screens, sleek stylish and powerful. If HP managed to build such a great machine in 2010 for £1.3K why the b***** h*** no manufacturer is picking up on this trail. Laptops with 17 inch screens are just too small for a portable workstation. Every architect, grafic designer or engineer would feel the same way. To add insult to injury, Dell's rubbish design for its Precision line or the Micky Mouse gaming laptops out there don't offer any viable alternative.

Anyway, just venting frustration, but thanks again for trying to help.

Hello... LOL I understand venting for sure...
1) remove the battery or PS change things?
2) Sometimes recovery software is written to check for "OEM" installed hardware... have you tried just standard install media?
3) The exterior monitor connectivity options have improved for these units... maybe the "NEW" design standard?
