It has been listed as a AMD Radeon HD 5970 Hemlock XT with a different cooler. From what I have found on google images it looks more like a 5850 and it also says in the auction that it works off 5850 or 5870 drivers. Looks a bit dodgy!
There was also a photo of the apparent specs of this card
Thanks for any help!
That isn't a 5970 (dual gpu) card- the specs are all for a single gpu not dual.
Out of interest why are you interested in this? Most mid range modern gpu's are faster...
Excuse my ignorance, I though all 5970's are dual gpu, and I though it would be an cheap and easy upgrade from my 6950.
Yeah they are- that card isn't a 5970. Also you really don't want dual gpu imo, has lots of issues like bad frame pacing and such.
To be honest you could pick up something cheap like an R9 380 or GTX 960 and get more performance than either of those cards.
Edit: If you want a second hand card to upgrade to, look out for cards like the HD 7950 or 7970 cards, R9 280 / 280X, GTX 770 and so on. Any of those would be a better upgrade imo...
So I've told the guy my story and he's not happy with me at all, arguing that this is a 5970 and to look at the specs hes provided which 'do not lie'. Is there any way to counter this? Perhaps someone know what card this actually is? I've asked him for the information on the back sticker, * but he said there is no such sticker.
Have a look at this: This is the Toms review for the HD5970 (so I think a pretty trustworthy source):

Pay note to the specifications. THe HD5970 should have 64 rops, 3200 shaders and 2gb of memory. The card listed above has exactly half that, which oddly enough matches the specifications of the HD 5870, which is also slower than your current card.
Also- even if this is somehow a HD5970, he's modified the cooler to something not designed for the card, which I wouldn't trust at all. Then you have all the problems associated with dual gpu's- many games don't support them. Final issue- the HD5000 (and 6000) series are no longer supported by AMD and have no DX12 support and no future driver updates.
The info he's provided just doesn't add up, and irrespective, I just don't see buying a HD5000 series card makes much sense when you can pick up a more powerful single gpu card for $150 brand new.
