CPU Fan Error on Boot. Fans spinning, but temps still rise.

So I've had my custom pc for about 7 or 8 months, when I built it everything was fine, except one thing: corsair link wouldn't recognize my cpu cooler. The fans still spun, and I could adjust them, it just never registered in corsair link to show me rpms or anything. My cpu temps rarely got to about 34. So no worries.

Recently I started playing The Witcher 3 and I noticed my temps getting up into the 40s, but I still wasn't too concerned. Last time I played temps got up to about 52-53 so I decided to shut it down. (I also heard a couple clicking noises that sounded like they may have been inside my computer... but I'm not 100% on that) When I rebooted later I got the "CPU fan error. Press F1 to run setup."

So I did, and was clicking around in the bios and noticed that the cpu temp was going up like 1 degree every 4-5 seconds maybe. So I adjusted the fan speed to max and it was still increasing. It got to about 57 and I shut it down again. I opened it up and unplugged it and replugged it into the mobo. I'm 99.99% sure its plugged into the right spot, and the right way because it can only go in one way. I haven't tried again, because frankly, I have no idea what to do. Any idea what the problem is?

Parts in question:
Asus Z971i-Plus Mobo
Corsair H100i GTX
i5-4690k

Yeah, the only thing you can do is check the CPU fan RPMs in the BIOS, which I suspect will not be 2000, if not than the pump is not running. Time to RMA and replace.

The fans do run. I was mainly concerned about temps because it was not under load, I was only in the bios. The fans were on full speed and the temperature went from 28 to 57 and was still rising.

How can I test if the pump is actually circulating? Because I was wondering if there was something wrong with the pump since the fans clearly work.

So the pump has sata power going to it right and then you have the 4 pin fan connector, it should be running at 2000 RPM. I would let it boot into windows and see what it stabilizes at. You should be able to hear a slight hum from the pump, however that other noise you heard may have been the pump crapping out. The i5 doesn't shut down till 100deg c so you have plenty of time if you see the temps don't stop going up, you aren't going to hurt anything if you hit 70, 80, even 90.

Ok, I'm at work right now and I will check when I get home, but I do know that my fan connector was only a 3-pin. I just did what the manual said and plugged it into the 4 pin slot on the mobo.

On startup it tells me "CPU fan error, press f1 to run setup" If I ignore that will it boot windows?

It should go into windows.

CPU fan error probably means it failed, a far as the computer is concerned it doesn't know the fan connector is reading a pump. 3 pin is fine it can still get an rpm reading from the pump. Should be around 2000ish rpm.

I can't get it to boot into windows. It just sits at the boot screen with the cpu fan error. I can get into bios, but that's it.

As far as the pump goes, I couldn't hear anything happening. I put my hand against the pump and didn't feel any kind of vibrations. Doesn't feel like a good sign.
