Is it possible to install tracking software on a phone without physical access to it?

Without the target phone downloading software or the attacker having physical access, is it possible to install tracking software or alter the phone's memory in any way?

For example, could your next door neighbour install tracking software on your phone by just being near you and having a device that sends signals/radiation to your phone?

Almost anything is possible with enough knowledge and hardware. But in 99.99% of the cases worrying about stuff like this is silly. You may as well worry that your neighbor broke into your house and poisoned your milk.

No, that is very unlikely. Technically, it is possible if someone could access your phone via an open network connection (wifi, Bluetooth, etc), but the likelihood of such an occurrence is minuscule.

Are you concerned this could be happening to you?
