What is the actual harm done from bottlenecking

So I had this scenario boggling in mind. Say if some one was using a and fx6300 cpu and then upgrades their gpu to a gtx 1080, what kind of physical harm is done in this bottleneck. I understand that you won't get the most performance out the gpu but is there anything else than that?

There is no 'harm'. Nothing will break

But at the extreme end of things, every single system made will have a 'bottleneck' of some sort.
Unless every single part, GPU/CPU/RAM/monitor, is running at 100% equally....one of those is the weak sister. The other parts are waiting on that thing to do something.

For instance...an uber system with a EVGA 1080 GPU, i7 CPU, 32GB RAM, and a 12 year old 15" 4:3 monitor...the monitor is the bottleneck in the system.
Change that to 2GB RAM and a 4k monitor...the RAM is the bottleneck.

With all top end June 2016 parts...at some extreme resolution and detail...some 'thing' will max out before the other parts. That thing is the 'bottleneck'.

Are you talking about overclocking the cpu or the gpu? or both??

To render a scene is a whole bunch of steps, each one done somewhere and it takes a certain time to complete, if the CPU is a bottleneck you will have to simply wait a bit longer for the frame to complete. 16ms to make a frame is about 60fps, how much of that time is waiting for the CPU is up to your wallet.

You probably dont have enough CPU and workload to need to buy a $625 GTX1080 tbh.

You can get a Z97/i5-4690k for the money saved going for a 1070...
