Hi all,

I am rendering more complicated 3D models with Showcase 2016. Sometime it slows down or takes forever. It will either crash or I have to turn down the resolution. Ray tracing at times can be almost impossible. This is the computer specs.

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1607 v2 @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz
8.00 GB RAM DDR3 800/1066/1333/1600 (Not sure which one)
AMD FirePro W5000 (FireGL V) Graphics Adapter (Dedicated video memory: 2048 MB; Shared system memory: 3840 MB)

What can I do to make it better without changing the entire PC and motherboard? Should I upgrade the RAM or the graphic card? I plan to order Kington 64GB (4x16GB, DDR31600MHz). Is this enough or overkill? As for graphic card, does anyone know if the newest NVIDIA 1080 can be supported as well?

I am trying to make the most out of this one PC I got for work.

Thanks,

Andrew

Excellent!

I did a little digging into your program and I could not find whether the 1080 would have the same support as a workstation card. It may be because the 1080 is still so new that there is no info, but here is what I found on the Autodesk site:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/showcase/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/System-requirements-for-Autodesk-Showcase-2016.html

When I looked deeper on the site for gpus, they are not updated for specifics beyond Showcase 2014, so no recent cards (workstation included) are listed:

I would email Autodesk Support and...

Thanks.

I went to the Kingston Ram Finder and came across 16GB DDR3 1600MHZ ECC CL11 X4 1.35V Registered DIMM 240-pin (KTD-PE316LV/16G).

I purchased a slightly different RAM, KVR16R11D4K4/64, which is basically (4) 16GB RAM in one set. Except these RAMs operate at 1.5V. The rest of the specs are the same. Hopefully they can crossover.

I will look into the memtest86+ - Thanks!

Another option is to upgrade the cpu. I believe you can drop in a E5-2670 (v1) which would quadruple your processing power for it would take you from your current 4c/no HT proc to an 8c/16T with similar clock speed. The great part is that these processors are easily available on ebay for ~$50 - $70 for there have been a ton dumped into the market after Facebook and other companies upgraded their servers recently. It would be good to have 16GB of RAM minimum for this proc though...

Hope this helps!

I would email Autodesk Support and ask directly, maybe they can tell you about 1080 support/capabilities compared to your current card, which is supported (at least through Showcase 2014):

Just more info and food for thought!
