So having built a few computers in my life, sound generally wasn't something I ever had an issue with. I recently built a PC for my cousin and it's either the mic works in the mic port, or the sound works in the speaker port. His mic is a one jack and doesn't have 2 for mic and speaker. He had an HP all in one computer before and the mic worked just fine. Anybody have any input?

Solution
Hello... 1) you need to verify a input type/TASK for that connector... with the MB sound chip APP... typically in the device Manager.
2) go to device manger-sound-record and determine/set the MIC for operation for the OS.
3) go to device manger-sound and determine/set the speakers for operation for the OS.

I'm not sure if it's still true but some cases input jacks I've had in the past have had a switch that disconnections the rear speakers when something is plugged in. If that's what's happening there is no easy fix as they did not intend for both to work at once (I fixed my last one with a solder bridge or sodder if you're in the US).

Check the motherboard connection to the case is the right type, some cases have both connectors and some cases do as well. Others can have the Audio mode changed in the BIOS or only support one connection standard. I forget the names but there are 2 common standards for front Audio and they are not totally compatible.

You could look for a 5.25 or 3.5" panel with Audio connectors to get around using the case ones. Or use a USB mic and avoid the whole issue.
